The Cheyney University C Club’s seventh annual Wade Wilson Golf Tournament and silent auction at the Penn Oaks Golf Club went off without a hitch. The Monday, August 22, 2016 event raised more than $42,000 in much-needed scholarship money for Cheyney University student-athletes, cheerleaders and band members.
More than 90 golfers, made up of C Club members, alumni, sponsors and friends of Cheyney University, enjoyed a beautiful day on the majestic Penn Oaks 18-hole championship golf course to help support the athletic programs at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the nation’s first Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
During the tournament, a group of non-golfers visited Pinot’s Palette of Glen Mills for a Paint and Sip for Scholarships activity. Participants interacted with experienced artists who taught them how to create a painting while enjoying some wine and snacks. All materials including canvas, paint and brushes were provided. At the end of the event, they took home their masterpieces. Those who participated said they had a ton of fun and would definitely do it again next year.
The two groups—golfers and non-golfers–came together as one in the afternoon to enjoy a lunch buffet, silent auction and a 50-50 raffle inside one of Penn Oaks’ beautiful banquet halls.
C Club newly-elected president, Joseph DeVane ’88, who presided over the festivities, thanked all of the sponsors and supporters along with the countless number of volunteers who helped facilitate another successful tournament and silent auction. This year’s events raised tens of thousands of dollars, bringing the total raised over the last seven years to over $250,000. Student athletes, cheerleaders and band members are grateful.
“The C Club has been one of the sole sources of funding for band members,” explains Band Director Allen Gardner. “The money they give helps a lot of students and, oftentimes, determines whether or not the students can afford school or books. C Club scholarships really make a difference.”
Communications major Brittany Brown, who is putting herself through school, was able to complete her sophomore and junior years at Cheyney because of scholarship money she received from The C Club.
