CHEYNEY, PA (March 23, 2016) – The Cheyney C Club, a Philadelphia nonprofit and athletic booster club, is excited to announce the inaugural Cheyney C Club 5k Run/Walk & Health Education Fair being held on the historical campus of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The race will raise scholarship support for Cheyney student-athletes through runner donations, pledges, and sponsorships.
This is the first year The C Club will host a race and health fair in Thornbury Township, but Cheyney alumna and 5k Race Director Yasheaka Oakley Owens says the planning committee was up to the challenge and the event is already a success on many levels.
“We knew that we wanted to host an event that could empower our students as well as the residents of Chester and Delaware Counties, which Cheyney calls home,” said Oakley Owens.
“We set a goal to raise $10,000 in scholarship support and provide our neighbors with the opportunity to learn about programs or services that could improve their wellbeing, so we are very thankful to our sponsors, partners, and participants for taking the pledge to make this event a reality,” said Oakley Owens.
The race registration fee is $30 for adult runners or walkers, $15 for high school or college students, and $10 for children ages 5-12 participating in the one mile race on the track. Although on-site registration will be available on April 16, runners are encouraged to register in advance online for a guaranteed race bib, event t-shirt, and lunch after the race.
Starting at Cheyney’s O’Shields Stevenson Stadium, the 5k run will wind down Creek Road before returning to the campus. Select portions of Creek Road will be closed to motor vehicles during the event, but all traffic should resume by 11 a.m.
Walkers competing in the one mile event on the track will have the opportunity to win a prize for the fastest time. Medals and prizes for first through third place men’s, women’s and children finishes will be presented in the stadium at 10 a.m.
The Health Education Fair is free and open to the public. It will feature the Independence Blue Cross Express Truck and other local organizations providing visitors with information about Affordable Care Act health insurance coverage, blood pressure screenings, as well as financial stability, and education resources available in Chester and Delaware Counties.
The Cheyney C Club 5k Run/Walk & Health Education Fair is sponsored in part by The Cheyney Foundation, Lexus of Cherry Hill, Subway, Penn Oaks Golf Club, the Friends of the Delaware County Women’s Commission and many other individual and community supporters.
